The Glorious 12th

It seems like an apt time of year to mention the 12^th of August which is known as “The Glorious 12^th”

 

It’s the traditional start to the grouse shooting season and lasts until the 10^th December.

 

While the Grouse is usually thought of as being a Scottish bird it has a natural range that takes it right down to the south-west of England.

 

These medium to large size “gamebirds” are somewhat partridge-like, with rounded bodies, short wings and small heads with stout, arched bills. They feed on young shoots, buds and seeds.
