The Glorious 12th
Glorious for who!
It seems like an apt time of year to mention the 12th of August which is known as “The Glorious 12th”
It’s the traditional start to the grouse shooting season and lasts until the 10th December.
While the Grouse is usually thought of as being a Scottish bird it has a natural range that takes it right down to the south-west of England.
These medium to large size “gamebirds” are somewhat partridge-like, with rounded bodies, short wings and small heads with stout, arched bills. They feed on young shoots, buds and seeds.
Not as common as the Pheasant but such a lovely sight to see, so next time you see one around this date don’t shout “grouse” shout “duck” before the shotgun gets you!
